Treating Winter Skin

Posted by L R on

Cold weather, with its low relative humidity, wreaks havoc on our skin making it dry and flaky. Not only is the air drier, but indoor heating further depletes skin of its moisture. This not only effects your face, but also your hands, feet, and other areas of the body.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of dry skin include:

  • flakiness or scaliness
  • redness
  • rough texture
  • itchiness
  • raw, irritated skin
  • cracks in your skin
  • stinging or burning
  • a raw, sensitive to the touch feeling

Anytime you wash you face, hands or body, you are stripping your skin of its natural oils and it is vital that they be replaced. But not to worry, there are steps that you can take to prevent dry winter skin. And here they go:

  1. Moisturize right after washing
  2. Use overnight treatments or facial serums
  3. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day
  4. Use only gentle, fragrance free skin care products
  5. Add moisture to the air by using a humidifier
  6. Try adding occlusives ( a type of moisturizing agent that works by forming a protective coating on the surface of your skin) to your routine. Some examples of occlusives:
      • Cocoa butter
      • Shea butter
      • Mango butter
      • Rosehip oil
      • Jojoba oil
      • Almond oil
      • Coconut oil
      • Sunflower oil
      • Olive oil
      • Argan oil
